Legal Advice

The club retains a lawyer who is available to club members.  Each member is entitled to one free consultation from him for advice regarding a bike related incident.  Our attorney is Jim Reed, who is a prominent Cycling Attorney and Advocate in New York State and is a Director of the New York Bicycling Coalition.  Jim's Website

From Jim:
"Please appreciate that my view of legal matters is that there is no such thing as a dumb question and I would much prefer to answer a question early on before things turn into a chocolate mess because someone decided to plow ahead without getting some early legal advice.  It is always easier to avoid a problem rather than fix a problem……"

Rochester Bicycling Club Insurance Policy

Among the many benefits of membership in the Rochester Bicycling Club is coverage through our club insurance policy.  Our club policy is purchased through the League of American Bicyclists insurance program and is administered by American Specialty Insurance (AmerSpec). There are two main components: General Liability and Participant Accident Coverage.

When Does Coverage Apply?  All coverages apply only on RBC bike rides and events (e.g. - meetings, public awareness events, education classes, etc.).

Who is Covered:  All current members are covered while participating in covered activities.  Guests are covered only when participating in their first RBC bike ride or event.

General Liability Coverage:  This protects the club and its members from claims involving bodily injury or property damage.  (e.g. a cyclist on a club ride hits a pedestrian causing injury or causes damage to a third party's property.  Current policy limits are $1,000,000 per occurrence and $5,000,000 aggregate.

Participant Accident Coverage:  This coverage may pay up to $10,000 per person per accident.  Applies to expenses  in excess of other valid and collectible insurance(s), subject to a $500.00 deductible.   Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage may pay up to $5,000 per person per accident.

If involved in an accident, members should complete and submit an RBC Incident Report

The club will assist members with completion of an Accident Report to be submitted to AmerSpec, if indicated.

What this means to you:  If you are a current member of RBC or first time guest you are covered for liability claims arising out of club rides or events and, in the event of accident or injury, may be reimbursed for excess medical expenses.   As coverage only applies to club members (or first time guests) it is important that you maintain your membership and that you sign the waiver/sign-in sheet prior to participating in club rides.

While we hope that our members will never need it, RBC is pleased to make this valuable benefit available.
