Erie Canal
We will park and head out from Brockport cycling 40 miles to the Niagara County Camping Resort (near Lockport). No campground reservations are needed for cyclists arriving without a car, plus they discount the nightly rate to half. ($12 per person, double occupancy). If you prefer to drive to the campground, you will need a reservation. There is a basic camp store onsite and a Tops Market is only three miles away. Other perks include fresh drinking water, showers, flush toilets, lots of trees and a pond with a small beach. It is a very quiet area with plenty of open space.
Day two (optional ride) is a 50 mile out-and-back excursion to the end of the current canal in North Tonawanda. The route is flat, and we will have no camping gear on our bikes. Day three we return to Brockport. 40 more miles on the historic Empire State Trail.
For the three days, 90% of the miles are on finely crushed gravel with 10% on paved surfaces. The surfaces are mostly smooth, but moisture can affect surfaces. Tire width is important, (35-50 mm is recommended).
